How does Artificial Intelligence effect your Business?

It was great to see the UK taking a lead on getting some governance around how Artificial Intelligence (AI) is regulated. Hosting the AI Summit and delivering The Bletchley Declaration looks to be a great step forward.

Artificial Intelligence is already making huge changes, here are some of the benefits of AI for businesses.

AI can help improve decision making

By providing the ability to analyse large volumes of data to gain insights into areas such as customer behaviour, thus making it possible for businesses to create better targeted marketing campaigns.

AI in product development and research

AI can predict possible risks in the development process allowing companies to mitigate those risks early.

AI can help businesses who may not have the resources to hire staff with certain skill sets

For example where research needs to be carried out, by using AI a small business can access information that previously would have taken many hours to find and decipher.

AI online solutions and services that businesses utilise

From CRM systems to finance packages, HR applications to knowledge bases. Those service providers are using AI to enhance their products.

There are of course the risks of AI that need to be considered

Sometimes you may be required to document your adherence to security practices, which means additional paperwork and reporting tasks. It can be time-consuming and feels like unnecessary bureaucracy.

AI models rely on the data sets

The source of those data sets is not readily discernible. We all have heard the phrase Garbage in Garbage Out (GIGO). Do not take what AI produces without sense checking it yourself.

Bad Actors in the field of cyber security are using AI

Just as in business they are using the tools to automate their processes with activities such as automated hacking, creation of large scale phishing scams and automated vulnerability attacks. These are just some of the areas which they are using AI to scale-up their activities.

AI systems themselves can be vulnerable to attacks, such as adversarial attacks

By inducing a small changes to input data the outputs can be made to be drastically different and thus possibly misleading.

How Artificial Intelligence is affecting our business

At Greenlight we have taken a look at how our suppliers are using AI. Many of the suppliers we use and whose products we use in the service of our customers use a form of AI termed Machine Learning (ML). The terms Artificial intelligence and Machine Learning are often used interchangeably, Machine Learning is a subset of the broader category of AI.

  • Our anti-virus service uses advanced machine learning in how it’s products work to combat emerging threats.
  • Our backup service uses Machine Intelligence-based remote monitoring for continuous anomaly detection that is automated, adaptive and doesn’t require manual threshold setting.
  • Our cyber security monitoring service invested in Machine Learning and AI in it’s R&D activities.
  • Other service providers use AI in various aspects of their businesses, from product development to cyber security, service management to product monitoring.

The team at Greenlight are alert to the opportunities being brought forth with AI, and also informed about the challenges and risks.
